Materials: Stitched on a lightweight and durable embroidery hoop with linen fabric and cotton embroidery thread.

Poi: Traditionally associated as a women's artform in Māori culture however men are included in learning this beautiful skill and movement. For me the art of Poi is about self mastery, gracefulness, beauty and strength. Being brought up around kapa haka for most of my life it always makes think of my Mum, Aunty & Sisters and the love I get from them also being in a Marae environment and notions of extended whānau (family) and hard work and laughter.

I also love the process of embroidery and how it centres you into a place a presence with every stitch. Often, embroidery is associated with 'women's work' and I love that in this day and age of fast paced activity I can use the process of embroidery to slow things down. I often feel very feminine in the action of creating these pieces.

You gotta love a good Poi!!
