Traditionally the moko kauae (female chin tattoo) was understood to be worn by women of rank. In contemporary Māori culture it is also believed that it can be considered a physical manifestation of a women's true identity. I love the thought of this. Being so in tune and connected with your inner being. For me it also represents knowledge, self discovery, respect and inner strength.
I love the process of embroidery and how it centres you into a place of presence with every stitch. Often, embroidery is associated with 'women's work' and I love that in this day and age of fast paced activity I can use the process of embroidery to slow things down. I often feel very feminine in the action of creating these pieces.
